This is my edit from our filming of the shoe eating scene in The Gold Rush. This is not the final edit as the colours are wrong and sound needs to be added.

The Gold Rush

Our task for The Gold Rush was to re create a minor scene within the film,each group was given their own scene, my group was given the task of re creating the 'shoe eating scene'. And so we decided to plan out our ideas.

Setting.

To recreate the small cabin, we're deciding a smaller room in school to try and keep the scale of it all perfect.

Cast list.

Charlie Chaplin-George Cooke, to try and resemble the characterisation as best as possible.

Big Jim-Marcus Bale, much taller than George to keep the idea of scale intact.

Costume.

Trying to match the scene as best as possible, using a suit, top hat and cane for Chaplin, the just a button up jacket for Big Jim. We will possibly look in charity shops for this.

'Booksmart' film research talk

Historical/ Social/ Political/ Cultural context

Booksmart is set now, it is contemporary - very current. It is set in America (LA, California) showing teenage life - schools and partying. It relates to real events like growing up and what teenagers prioritise work or partying. We see the two main characters friendship

Get off my land

In this task we will be recreating a short film, trying to match every detail of it in our own way. The video we're re-creating is here;

Setting

We're planning on filming our movie at Wymondham Abbey. This is because its an area of rural landscape which will be ideal for all of our shots for example, during our dialogue with the farmer, and also each and every walking shot etc. Also its perfect due to it having a gate which will easily match our gate sequence.

Costume

Regarding costume, our cast will be very similar to the video with the farmer wearing very farm like clothes maybe with welly boots and a big jacket. Our couple would be typical hike clothes sort of, trainers, jackets, jeans and even backpacks sort of as they're on a long walk.

When the younger male is shot, we'll use fake blood on the females face to portray a heavy bullet has just killed this other man.

Lighting

Natural lighting will be achieved through the use of the sun during the day, this will be easy access due to our location.
Story board and written script

First film

This is my first film.
The 180-degree rule is a cinematography guideline that states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another. When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse angle.
Match on action is an editing technique for continuity in which one shot cuts to another shot, portraying an action of the subject in the first shot. This creates the impression of a sense of continuity and takes the attention away from any slight cutting or continuity issues.

Mise-en-scene in Rear Window

Mise-en-scene is the arrangement of the scenery on the stage of a theatrical production or the set of a film. The elements of Mise-en-scene are: setting, lighting, costume, makeup and character expression. Mise-en-scene is everything you can see in the camera shot.

In the opening scene of 'Rear Window' Mise-en-scene creates meaning by showing the scene in the town, giving the viewers an instant idea and/or create meaning of what the film could be about and where it is based etc. The opening scene is a variety of different shots of then town; from wide shots of the buildings, up close in the apartments and close ups of a characters giving an idea of who may be important during the film. There are plenty of overviews of the town with lots of different things going on in the house from a couple waking up (character expression and movement) on a balcony implying its the morning and also implies at this time period people were desperate for somewhere to sleep. Also the houses are being shown very close together and on top of each other (setting), the town being very crowded suggests that the houses are not very expensive in this urban area. In the background you can see a lot of upbuilt buildings (setting) which shows that they are near the city. The sky is a dark grey (lighting) through the opening scene which highlights pollution in the air. However, at the end of the scene the sky is lit up as bright blue possibly suggesting a good vibe and maybe the sun coming up again, suggesting it's morning. There are a huge range of props in the opening scene from thermometers to show the temperature to phones and pictures etc. Each prop helps give an idea of personality to the

viewer about each character. Eg. the man in the wheelchair has clearly broken his leg and all the pictures in his house of planes hints he was maybe in a plane accident (props).  In the scene makeup is minimal but the man in the wheel chair appears to be sweating a lot (makeup) proving it is hot. Everyone has their windows open as well (setting) showing the high temperature. There is no obvious or bold makeup which implies that the film is just set in everyday life.                                    

                                                                                                                     

Practical task 1

 EQUILIBRIUM - George is happily on his way to school like he is every morning. He makes sure                                     to lock it up so its safe.

 DISRUPTION - A evil girl called Bethan likes the look of Georges bike so decides to steal it whilst                               George is at school.

 RECIGNITION - George comes out of school to see his bike not there anymore, he is shocked,                                       confused and upset to see this.

 ATTEMPT TO REPAIR - George hunts for the thief and finds him. Then threatens to beat her up                                                   when he finds her so she gets off the bike.

NEW EQUILIBRIUM - George cycles home on his bike satisfied.


MISE-EN-SCENE

 In all the pictures we used a bike as the main prop.
In picture 1 we ensure George looks happy to show the mood change. Picture 1 is a wide shot to show the location, lots of cars, and with George on his bike in the centre of the shot so he's the main focus. Bethan and George are both wearing sixth form clothes to show the setting.

Setting - we set the task in the bike sheds at school so the location and Georges destination was clear.

 We done this picture as a close up to show George's facial expression. The facial expressions throughout the pictures help tell the story.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Todorov's theory of narrative development

This is a simple video explaining Todorov's theory of narrative films:

Todorov's theory is that films follow a 5 part structure which starts with equilibrium, where everything is balanced. Then something happens that disrupts the equilibrium and something goes wrong. The disruption is then recognised. Once the disruption is recognised there is then an attempt to repair the disruption to get everything back to normal. Lastly, a new equilibrium is created as the issue is resolved. It
is called a new equilibrium because it is back to a balanced level like the start but something is different because of the things that have happened throughout the film. This theory appears in most films such as wizard of oz, hunger games etc.


In 'nanny mcphee', the film follows Todorov's 5 part structure. The equilibrium is a part of the film you don't actually see where the family is happy with the mother still around.  The disruption is when the mother leaves and the kids go off the rails and constantly misbehave. The recognition is getting nannys in to help out the father. The attempt to repair is getting nanny McPhee in to try as a last resort. New equilibrium is the kids learning how to behave and everything ending happy with their dad newly married with a women they love.
